Monica Sawyer, Riverwood Middle Principal.

Monica Sawyer was named the principal of Riverwood Middle at the August Johnston County Board of Education meeting held on Tuesday, Aug. 9.

Sawyer received her Master of Executive Leadership Studies from Gardner-Webb University in 2015. She has served in education for the last 18 years, most recently as Assistant Principal of South Garner High School in Wake County Public Schools (WCPSS).

Sawyer is a resident of Clayton and attended Johnston County Public Schools as a child, herself.

“I am thrilled to be a Riverwood Middle School Raven! I can’t wait to meet all of the students, staff, and families and get started,”  said Sawyer. “Being a principal has been my dream since I was a senior at Smithfield-Selma High School and to be able to serve the Riverwood community is such an honor. I look forward to partnering with you and seeing just how high our Ravens can fly!”

Throughout her time in education, Sawyer has served as an assistant principal, career and technical education department chair, and a business and marketing teacher. She was recently named the WCPSS 2020-2021 Assistant Principal of the Year.

“We are looking forward to Ms. Sawyer bringing her leadership and expertise to the students at Riverwood Middle,” said JCPS Superintendent Dr. Eric Bracy. “Wonderful things are happening in Johnston County Public Schools, and we are excited that Ms. Sawyer will be a part of it.”
