A moped operator was seriously injured in a single vehicle accident Monday night on the Neuse River Bridge on S. Brightleaf Boulevard (US 301) in Smithfield. Police and EMS responded to the 8:19pm wreck and found Ronnie Ray Gay of Will Drive, Smithfield suffering from serious injuries.
Smithfield Police said Ray was traveling southbound over the bridge when he struck a guardrail and was ejected onto the pavement. Police estimated he was traveling at 30mph at the time he wrecked and was ejected.
Ray was transported by Johnston County EMS to WakeMed with serious injuries. Police later charged Ray with driving while impaired and a lane control violation.
