Smithfield and Selma Police are asking for help identifying two suspects wanted for passing counterfeit $100 bills at local businesses. The incidents started on Wednesday. So far, six Smithfield businesses and two Selma stores have reported the suspect or suspects have passed the counterfeit bills.
All six of the incidents in Smithfield occurred in the Smithfield Crossings areas. The suspect was successful in passing the fake money at three eateries but was not successful at three retail businesses. In Selma, the suspects were successful in passing the bills at the Food Lion and Family Dollar.
Selma Police described the suspects as a black male and black female. Smithfield Police said the suspect in their cases was a black male.
Smithfield Police Captain R.K. Powell said merchants and citizens should inspect currency before accepting any payment. All the bills had the same serial number: K15342724A.
A surveillance image from one of the businesses in Smithfield was released by police on Friday in hopes someone may recognize the individual. Anyone who has information about the incidents is asked to contact Selma Police at 919-965-8189 or Smithfield Police at 919-934-2121.
