A Smithfield woman is facing several charges including child abuse for allegedly placing her children in potential harm.
Around 3:00 AM Monday, Smithfield Police stopped a vehicle for failing to stop at a stop sign on North Equity Drive at Outlet Center Drive. The officer determined the 16 year-old driver did not have a license.
Police Captain R.K. Powell said 32 year-old Vera Ann Holder of Ray Drive was in the passenger seat and was extremely intoxicated. Holder’s 7 year-old child was in the back seat and was not restrained.
Officers learned Holder’s three other children, ages 3, 5, and 11 had been left alone in a nearby hotel room.
Holder was charged with 4 counts of child abuse, being intoxicated and disruptive, and allowing an unlicensed driver to operate a motor vehicle. She was given a $10,000 bond and was ordered to appear in court June 2nd on the misdemeanor offenses.
