Motorcyclist Injured On US70

A motorcycle driver was hospitalized Monday after he was forced to lay down his bike and slide across US 70 after someone turned in front of him.  It happened just after 3 pm Monday in front of a business complex at 9973 US Hwy 70 West.

Accident-US70-Clayton-2-2-2016-LargeWilliam Scott Lowenthal of South Carolina was riding his motorcycle eastbound on 70 to visit a friend in Smithfield.   A car traveling westbound on 70 was in the median to turn left across the highway into the business complex.   The driver, Sarah Jay of Clayton, says she did not see the motorcycle and pulled out in front of it, according to Stacy Beard, Public Information Officer with the Town of Clayton.

Lowenthal was able to apply his brakes, but he could not stop in time and had to lay down his bike – sliding into the car.  He was rushed to WakeMed hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Jay was charged with a moving violation for failing to see traffic in the highway before crossing. Photo by JoCoFire.com
