A 25 year-old man was critically injured after crashing his motorcycle Monday afternoon. Emergency crews responded to the 5:16pm accident on Byrd Road at New Creech Road seven miles north of Selma.
Juan Cruz Zavalla of Black Forest Drive, Clayton was traveling eastbound on his 2006 Suzuki on Byrd Road at approximately 80 miles per hour when he failed to stop for a stop sign at a t-intersection, ran through the intersection and struck a tree.
Zavalla was unconscious at the scene. He was rushed by ambulance to Wake Medical Center for critical injuries.
Troopers estimate he was traveling at 45mph at the time of impact.
Zavalla was charged with driving while impaired and a stop sign violation. The motorcycle sustained an estimated $3,000 in damage, according to an accident report. Photos by John Payne
