Multi-Agency Response, Including Johnston County, Ends In Arrest After Goldsboro Shooting

GOLDSBORO, N.C. – A man is in custody following an early morning shooting and standoff that led to a house fire in Goldsboro, with assistance from the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and several other agencies.
Officers with the Goldsboro Police Department responded around 5:38 a.m. Wednesday to a reported breaking and entering in progress at a home on Shelley Drive. When officers arrived, they encountered a chaotic scene as a woman fled through the garage while being chased by a male suspect.

Authorities said the suspect shot the woman during the encounter. She was transported to UNC Health Wayne with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Goldsboro Police returned fire as the suspect was shooting, possibly striking him. The man then retreated back inside the residence, prompting officers to secure the perimeter and call for additional resources.

Multiple agencies responded to assist, including teams from Wayne, Johnston, Lenoir and Greene counties. Deputies with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office STAR Team were among those who helped support the operation as the situation escalated into a standoff.
A crisis negotiation team attempted to make contact with the suspect, while officers deployed robotic equipment to search the home. During that search, investigators observed evidence indicating an assault had taken place inside the residence.
Authorities then deployed gas in an effort to force the suspect out, but he refused to surrender. A second deployment of gas followed, after which a fire broke out in the bedroom where the suspect was believed to be hiding.

The blaze quickly grew, drawing a response from the Goldsboro Fire Department. Fire crews brought the fire under control.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody.
Officials said the case is being investigated as attempted murder and arson. The investigation remains ongoing.
