On December 9th, the Junior Women’s League of Smithfield gave nearly 60 children new warm winter coats. All the members at My Kid’s Club (MKC) received a beautifully wrapped coat with their name on a Christmas label.
“It is hard for some of us to imagine what it feels like to not have a coat to keep us warm in the colder weather. But it had already begun to impact us at the club. Every day the children play on the playground, but some didn’t have coats to keep them warm and were asking to come inside even though they wanted to play. Now we can all go out together and have fun.” said Alison Gammage the Executive Director of MKC.
The MKC after school program operates out of Selma next to Selma Elementary School. Its programs focus on academic enrichment and support, but making sure everyone is warm and has had a ‘big’ snack are essential components to helping the children to be available to learn.
