SMITHFIELD – The NC Department of Transportation says the project to replace a bridge on NC Highway 210 near Smithfield is ahead of schedule.

The two lane bridge over Middle Creek, near the Swift Creek Road intersection, is being replaced by S.T. Wooten at a price of $3.2 million.

The roadway closed in June 2024 for the original bridge, built during the Great Depression, to be demolished. The contract required the new bridge to be completed and opened no later than July 1, 2025.

A spokesperson for the NCDOT said the new bridge is substantially complete and the contractor is currently working on roadway items. People may notice the new bridge was built quickly but other tasks remain including grading the roadway and constructing drainage ditches.

Even with the rainy weather this week, the NCDOT says the project is head of schedule. The road and new bridge will likely open in May or June 2025.

    • I mean…. There was quite a few people that died building the Empire State Building…. I’d say that’s a fair trade to safely do something vs losing lives of workers…..

    • That’s difference between the private sector the government! We can only hope that DOGE will work it’s way down to the state level and disband the DOT and force them to sell their assets (like this bridge) to a private company. Let them charge a toll (this way only the people who actually use the bridge have to pay for it) and worry about repairs & maintenance. #MAGA

  1. Yall save all your complaints, because the bridge over hwy 301 at the river is next. But will be built beside the tracks, too keep 301 open.
