NC SBI Announces Groundbreaking For New Headquarters

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation officials will break ground next week on a major redevelopment project that will reshape the agency’s longtime Raleigh campus and centralize operations currently spread across multiple locations.

The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for May 19 at 10 a.m. at the SBI campus located at 3320 Garner Road in Raleigh.

The project includes construction of a new headquarters building, a separate logistics facility, and major renovations to the agency’s existing headquarters. When completed, the development will add nearly 100,000 square feet of new and upgraded space designed to modernize operations and support future growth within the agency.

SBI Director Chip Hawley said the project represents a long-term investment in both public safety and the agency’s ability to support law enforcement agencies across North Carolina.

“This project represents a significant investment in the future of the SBI and the public safety of North Carolina,” Hawley said in a statement. “By bringing our teams together in a modern, purpose-built environment, we are strengthening our ability to serve our law enforcement partners and the people of this state.”

According to the SBI, the new campus will consolidate employees from several locations into a single complex aimed at improving coordination and efficiency between divisions.

The campus is expected to house SBI administration, Information Technology, the North Carolina Information Sharing and Analysis Center — commonly known as the Fusion Center — statewide specialized programs, and the Criminal Information and Identification Section. Plans also include training classrooms, conference areas, and a fitness center for employees.

Officials described the project as Phase One of a larger four-phase campus redevelopment plan, marking the most significant overhaul of the site in more than five decades.

Initial construction will include the new headquarters facility, the first phase of the logistics building, site improvements, and a new roadway connection to Tryon Drive. Future phases are expected to expand logistics operations, add a maintenance facility, and create additional parking areas.

Planning for the redevelopment began in late 2022. SBI personnel relocated to a temporary headquarters in 2024 to allow construction preparation to begin. Since then, crews have completed demolition work, utility installation, and site preparation.

Construction is expected to continue through late 2027, with employees anticipated to move into the new facilities in early 2028.
