GARNER – A 71-year-old bridge is set to be replaced thanks to a $11.6 million contract recently awarded by the N.C. Department of Transportation.
The bridge on N.C. 50 (Benson Road) over U.S. 70 was built in 1952. While safe, it is no longer up to current design standards.
NCDOT awarded the contract to Blythe Construction Inc. of Charlotte as the lowest qualified bidder for this project.
Contractors may begin work this spring, and the contract calls for substantial completion in the fall of 2026.
During construction, the existing bridge will stay open and carry traffic until the new bridge — to be built adjacent to the existing bridge — is finished to reduce impacts on traffic.
