SMITHFIELD – On Wednesday, May 5 and Thursday, May 6 Neuse Charter School “buddies” cheered on their own school’s athletes and others from across Johnston County. Special Olympics was held over a period of 2 days at SSS High. Neuse Charter provided 91 volunteers to chaperone athletes and had 12 athletes participate in the Special Olympics.
After a send-off celebratory parade on campus, the volunteers and athletes walked across M. Durwood Stephenson Parkway to the day of festivities and athletic events. Volunteers and athletes enjoyed food donated by Jersey Mike’s of Smithfield and Chick-fil-a of Smithfield.
“Special Olympics is such an amazing event for students not only at our school but across the county as well. We are extremely proud of all of our athletes and volunteers that made this event so special. NCS looks forward to continuing that partnership in the years to come,” said Beth Bradley, special education teacher at Neuse Charter.
“Beth Bradley, Special Education Teacher, organized a fantastic event for all of our NCS athletes and volunteers. She did such a great job that she was asked to bring back additional volunteers for day 2,” said Amanda Ormiston, Upper Academy Director at Neuse Charter. “Additionally, NCS was asked to provide ‘buddies’ again at next year’s Special Olympics.”
