New Clayton Fire Truck Overturns While Responding To Call

CLAYTON, N.C. – A brand new Clayton Fire Department engine overturned Thursday morning while responding to a medical call, just days after the truck was placed into service.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 6 a.m. on Covered Bridge Road between Payton Drive and Club Connection Boulevard.

Three Clayton Fire Department personnel were aboard the engine. No one was injured or transported to the hospital.

Clayton Police are investigating the crash.

The engine involved is one of two new fire engines recently purchased by the Town of Clayton for approximately $950,000 each.

Town officials said the engine was placed into service Monday afternoon, Sept. 21.

The extent of the damage was not immediately known. The town said the vehicle is insured.

Fire and emergency response coverage in Clayton was not disrupted by the crash. Other Clayton Fire personnel remained available to answer calls, while mutual aid departments also offered assistance if needed.

Covered Bridge Road was closed for approximately three hours while crews cleared the scene and police conducted their initial investigation.

The road has since reopened.
