A new police officer joined the Smithfield police force this week.
Officer James David Barbour II received his oath Tuesday which was administered by Smithfield Mayor John Lampe. Officer Barbour, 22, who is currently residing in the Clayton area, is a graduate of West Johnston High School and a lifelong Johnston County resident. He was a former member of the Wilson’s Mills Fire Department. He recently graduated from Basic Law Enforcement Training.
Barbour said he became a firefighter at the age of 17. By the age of 20 he knew he wanted to be a police officer. “I saw the difference law enforcement can make in a community. I like helping people and being proactive in the community. I want to make a difference and make Smithfield a better place to live.”
After receiving his oath, Officer Barbour was greeted by each member of the town council. He fills an existing vacancy on the patrol division. WTSB Photo
