Edith Powell Wilkins

    Edith Powell Rose Wilkins, 89, known to all as “Edie Pie,” passed away on April 10, 2022 at SECU Hospice House after a period of declining health. Edie Pie was the daughter of Edith Powell Rose and Herschell Vaughn (H.V.) Rose. She was predeceased by her parents, an infant brother, her husband Melvin Lambert Wilkins Sr, and grandson Joshua Edward Kyle.

    Edie Pie was a graduate of Smithfield High School Class of 1951. She continued her studies at Greensboro College and earned her Batchelor’s degree from Wake Forest University.

    Edie Pie is survived by her four children, William Andrew “Andy” Wilkins, and his fiancé Dorothy Johnson; Cynthia Wilkins Kyle and her husband John Richard Kyle, their children Zachariah Aaron Kyle and his wife Megan, and Whitney Rose Kyle; Edith “Edie” Wilkins Lane and her children Rachel Brown Cook and her husband Tim, Mary Hannah Lane, and John “Jack” Robert Lane; and Melvin Lambert Wilkins, Jr. Edie Pie is also survived by her “daughter of choice” Shearer Williams Bridges, her husband Dub, Kristyn Bridges Lowe and her husband Brian. Edie Pie was fortunate indeed to welcome four great grandchildren into her busy family.

    A lifelong member of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church of Smithfield, Edie Pie served for years on the Vestry, Alter Guild, and on numerous search committees. She gave freely and joyfully of her time and services. There was seldom an occasion that she refused a call to help her church family, working tirelessly to ensure that no one was left wanting. She loved horseback riding, often hosting trail rides and gatherings at the farm cabin. She was an avid Bridge player, and member of several garden clubs. She loved trips with “The Intrepid Travelers,” and cherished the memories made on their adventures together. Her love for all creatures great and small was evidenced by her many cats and dogs.

    Visitation will be held prior to funeral services at the Lawrence Hall, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, on April 20th at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, please kindly offer donations to SECU Hospice House, Smithfield, NC.
