Edward Benjamin, Jr.

    Edward Benjamin was born on July 28, 1945, to Minnie Brockington-Benjamin and Edward Benjamin Sr. in Hartsville, SC. He attended Butler High School in Hartsville, SC where he earned his high school diploma and received a technical training certificate from Job Corp. In 1979, Edward migrated to New Jersey where he was united in marriage to Erma Benjamin and together, they share 7 children. He was employed by Edison Park Fast for 30 years and went on to work for Hudson Blueprint in Newark, NJ for 7 years. He then retired in the early 1990s.

    Better known to many as “Big Ben”, Edward was an avid bowler and enjoyed bowling in several leagues and tournaments. He was extremely active in his grand & great-grandchildren’s lives. He loved them all the same. He assisted in raising his eldest grandson, Sgt. 1st Class, Alterek Blake. He was also a member of Garden State Temple Church in Newark, NJ in 1980, where he was ordained as a Deacon in 1985. He later joined Bibleway Church of God and Christ, where he remained faithful until he relocated to Goldsboro, NC. In 2017, where he joined Whosoever Will Disciples of Christ Church, under Pastor Dr. Gertie Stevens.

    Deacon Benjamin was a humble, God-fearing, and loyal man of God with sound faith and integrity. He took care of the physical and logistical needs of the church with readiness and timeliness. He participated faithfully in the church prayer line. Edward was especially known for his love for sports. His favorite football team was the Pittsburgh Steelers and his favorite Basketball team was the Philadelphia 76ers with Commentator Dr. J. After fighting a good fight and keeping his faith. Edward made his transition to glory on December 3, 2022, in the comfort of his home.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Minnie Benjamin, his brothers: Patrick Benjamin, Calvin Benjamin, and Willie Robinson, and his son-in-law, Bishop Edward Patrick. Edward is survived by his loving wife, Erma Benjamin, his children: Kenneth Anderson, Cynthia Patrick (Edward), Fredrick Smith, Clifford Smith, James Smith, Tamera Smith, and Skyeva Harrell, his siblings: James Benjamin, Otis Benjamin (Diann), and sister-in-law, Cynthia Benjamin, as well as 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and his childhood friend Donald Poston.
