Born on February 6, 1963, in Leesburg, Virginia, Eric was a beloved son, brother, and friend whose life touched many with warmth, kindness, and a deep passion for history. Growing up in Leesburg, Eric developed a love for learning that would shape his life and career. After graduating from high school, he attended Campbell University earning his undergraduate degree, where he formed lasting friendships that would remain a central part of his life. Eric earned his Master’s in Humanities and Social Sciences from North Carolina State University in preparation for his career as a teacher and educational speaker.

A devoted historian, Eric found his calling as a teacher at Johnston Community College. His love for history, particularly the rich history of the South, was infectious. His students were drawn to his engaging personality and his genuine desire to share his knowledge with others. Eric’s classroom was a place where history came alive, and many of his students sought his guidance and mentorship beyond the classroom.

Eric’s talents extended beyond the lecture hall. He inherited a love for cooking from his grandfather, a master chef, and his culinary skills brought joy to all who were lucky enough to experience his meals. He delighted in preparing new dishes and often invited friends over to share in his love of food. One of his most cherished memories was hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for his family in his small apartment. The joy of seeing his loved ones savor his cooking was a source of pride and happiness for him.

An active member of the local community, Eric was deeply involved with museums and historians, always eager to learn more and share his insights. His faith was also an important part of his life, and he was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Smithfield. During his time in Raleigh, he was an active member of Christ Church. Eric’s connection to God began early in his life, attending Sunday school and church in his hometown of Leesburg. His faith and his kindness were guiding forces in his life.

Eric is survived by his mother, Carol M. (Jackson) Smith of Leesburg, Virginia, his brother, Travis Smith, also of Leesburg, as well as his aunt, Gertrude Evans, and uncle, Guthrie H. Ashton, John Tolbert (Suzanne) uncle/aunt, along with many cousins and extended family.
