Gereatha Mae West, age 90, passed away on Monday morning, May 20th, 2024 at Harnett Woods Nursing Center. She was born on November, 18, 1933 to the late Nura Turner Moss and James Harold Moss. In addition to her husband, William Claude West, Ms. West was preceded in death by her daughter, Wanda Smiley, and her siblings including sister, Janet Jones, and brothers Gene Moss and Junior Moss.
Ms. West is survived by her daughters, Donna West (Steve Gimello) of Winnabow, NC; Jan Massengill (Tim) of Erwin, NC and brother, Larry Moss (Betty) of Raleigh. Also grandchildren, Erica Putnam (Jonathon) of Erwin, Jessica Jones (Jon) of Newbern, NC, Angela Faircloth of Erwin, Brian Olgetree (Amy) of Benson, Lisa Powell (Daniel) of Wake Forest, and Kenneth Turner (Brittany) of Arizona. As well as twelve great grandchildren, Anslee Putnam, Cameron Jones, Cayden Jones, Addison Jones, Gavin Jones, Tyler Overby, Jaycee Olgetree, Jett Powell, Hayden Loch, Ace Turner, Kailey Stoltenborg, and Isabella Stoltenborg.
Gereatha and her husband, Claude married very young, in their teens, had three children and were married 71 years. She was very active in the Erwin Church of God most of her life; she was a Sunday School teacher and she often prayed for others. She was homemaker and worked for a while at the candy factory in Dunn.
Ms. West absolutely loved spending time with her family, often cooking Sunday lunch meals where they gathered after church. The family often went on camping trips. She enjoyed doing crafts, making wreaths, and other items. She also liked to sew and even made dresses for some of the grandchildren. Watching Hallmark movies was a favorite pastime for her.
Gereatha and her sister, Janet, could also be quite impulsive and often embarked on quick adventurous trips. Her family called the sisters “Thelma and Louise”.
The Gereatha Mae West family would like to especially thank nurse Urline Melvin and all the staff and caregivers at Harnett Woods Nursing Center for the special care they provided for their loved one.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 23, 2024 from 11:00 am to 12:25 pm at the West and Dunn Funeral Home of Erwin. Funeral service will follow at 12:30 pm in the West and Dunn Erwin Chapel and burial immediately after at Erwin Memorial Park Cemetery.
