Janet Dinnsen, 92, died at home on September 7, 2023 from natural causes. She was born in 1931 to Walter and Corinne Zingelmann of Mobile, Alabama. She spent her early childhood in Mobile surrounded by a very large, loving extended family. In 1941, Janet and her immediate family moved to Germany to be close to her father who had returned to his homeland at the beginning of WWII. While there she witnessed firsthand the perils of war.
In 1946, at the end of the war, Janet returned to Mobile, eventually moving to NYC to work and be near her sister. In 1949, she traveled to Germany to rejoin her parents. There Janet met and married Edwin Dinnsen in 1954. After starting a family, they ultimately settled in Smithfield, NC, in 1957 where they enjoyed many friends and became active at St. Paul Episcopal Church.
Janet is predeceased by her husband, Edwin A. Dinnsen, Jr., and her son, Edwin (Wynn) Dinnsen, III (Lisa). Surviving are her children, Corinne Hunt (Don) of Florence, SC, Greg Dinnsen (Jennifer) of Charlotte, NC, and Leslie Smith (Bert) of Four Oaks, NC, as well as nine grandchildren and five (six) great grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 2:15 PM on Tuesday September 12, 2023 at Hills of Neuse Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1PM until 2PM at Underwood Funeral Home on Tuesday prior to the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Episcopal Church at 218 S. Second St., Smithfield, NC 27577, or to the Edwin A. Dinnsen Scholarship Fund at Johnston Community College at 245 College Road, Smithfield, NC 27577.
The most dear of gentle spirits has passed on to the Lord’s house to be reunited with loved ones gone on before. Godspeed, Janet. You were the best mother-in-law I could ever have hoped for, and we will see.you again in heaven!!
