Jean Brown Thompson, age 89, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2023, at The Pearl in Dallas, GA. She was born October 25, 1934, in Raleigh, NC to Fletcher and Katherine (Tew) Brown.
Jean grew up in Raleigh and graduated from Hugh Morrison High School. After high school she remained in Raleigh and went on to graduate from Peace College. On May 20, 1967, she married Russell G. Thompson and together they were parents to two sons, Rusty, and Eric.
Jean worked in secretarial and sales roles at Norfolk Southern Railroad, Montgomery Ward, the USPS, and Associates Financial Services. For Jean, however, her most important roles were wife and mother. She was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. Her life revolved around her husband, children, grandchildren, and their household. She was devoted to her family and raised her two sons to be kind, caring, well mannered, and hard working. Jean was an exemplary mother and the heart of her family.
Over their 56 years of marriage, Jean and Russ lived in 10 cities across seven states. With each move, Jean provided a smooth transition for her sons with new schools, neighborhoods, and friends. She was a terrific cook and baker with shepherd’s pie, prime rib, meatloaf, and her infamous green beans as family favorites. Jean demonstrated the social graces she learned as a child, always showing respect for others and treating everyone with kindness, often including neighbors and friends in evening meals.
Jean had a passion for sports. She enjoyed watching the Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays, as well as Kansas University men’s basketball games. In 1990, she attended the Superbowl in New Orleans with her family. She also loved watching and supporting her grandchildren engage in their favorite sports and hobbies, including skiing, hiking, fishing, theater, baseball, basketball, or running. She also loved their visits, both in person and via phone. Jean lit up with excitement when her grandchildren called to share their activities and interests with her. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents Fletcher and Katherine Brown and two sisters, Joan Brown, and Anne Holt. Joan and Jean were twin sisters. Jean is survived by her husband of 56 years, Russell G. Thompson, Dallas, GA, two sons, Rusty (Lou) Thompson, Colorado, Eric (Susan) Thompson, Powder Springs, GA, and four grandchildren Gray and Annie Thompson, Colorado, and Jack and Asher Thompson, Powder Springs, GA.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Pearl, Trinity Hospice Care, and Ms. Penny Adair for their loving care of Jean. Memorial services will be held at the Parrish Funeral Home in Selma, NC on January 27, 2024, with Sam Gore officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am followed by the Memorial Service at 11:00 am. Inurnment will be conducted immediately following the service at Thompson Cemetery in Smithfield, NC.
