Jimmy “Jay” Brooks Wood Jr.

Smithfield — Jimmy “Jay” Brooks Wood Jr., age 63, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the SECU Hospice House, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on April 23, 1962, in Johnston County, Jay was the son of the late Jimmy Brooks Wood and Emma Reddick Wood. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Thomas Ray Langdon.

Jay was a proud graduate of Campbell University, where he earned his Master’s degree in Education. He dedicated 30 years of his life to teaching in the North Carolina Public School System, touching countless lives as a beloved educator, coach, and mentor. Following his retirement from education, Jay continued serving others through his work as a health insurance broker.

A devoted member of First Baptist Church of Smithfield, Jay served faithfully as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, and committee member. He was an obedient servant of Christ who loved sharing his faith and the goodness of God with everyone he met.

Jay had a deep love for college football and cherished trips to Major League Baseball games with his brother.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., with the burial to follow in Price Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall.

Jay is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Tammy Langdon Wood, daughter, Emily Wood Long (Wyatt) of Goldsboro, son, Tyler Wood (Ashley) of Four Oaks, granddaughters, Autumn Wood, Fern Wood, brother, Roger Wood (Jennifer), brother-in-law, John “Jeff” Langdon of Pinkney, sister-in-law, Wanda Langdon Williams (Tony) of Bentonville, as well as many nieces, nephews and other loved ones.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Street Reach of Johnston County at 1425 S. Pollock St, Selma, NC, 27576, or to the SECU Hospice House of Smithfield at 426 Hospital Road, Smithfield, NC 27577.
