    John E. Calvert, Jr., age 93, of Clayton, NC passed away on April 27, 2022, at the SECU Hospice House of Johnston County in Smithfield, North Carolina.

    John is survived by his wife, Mary York Calvert; his daughter, Alicia Clinton; his grandson, York Clinton and his fiancée Megan Mathews, all of Clayton, North Carolina; a brother, Harry Calvert (Maxine); another brother, Heyward Calvert (Vivian); and a sister, Ruth Hammett; along with his nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Kim, Randy and Cole Hogge, and Gayle Judy.

    He is preceded in death by his father, John E. Calvert, Sr. and his mother, Sunie Nichols Calvert of Inman, South Carolina and a host of brothers and sisters.

    John was born on August 22, 1928, in Spartanburg, South Carolina to parents, John E. Calvert, Sr. and Sunie Nichols Calvert. He graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and completed his Master’s in Education from Furman University, in Greenville, South Carolina. During his career, John was a coach and teacher for many years, an Assistant Principal, and a Principal, where he worked for more than forty years in the school system. He was often heard telling students that they could be anything they wanted to be in life with hard work and dedication.

    John was a great family man and a loving father. He married Mary York Calvert in 1958 and they have been married for 63 years. The couple had one child together (Alicia) who was the apple of her daddy’s eye. John had one grandson (York) who he loved and adored. John and York shared many great memories on the golf course.

    John was a dedicated, active man who was deeply involved in helping others in any way he could.

    His love for educating others gave him great pleasure. He had great stories to tell about his life and his education, and he enjoyed sharing with anyone who would listen. He loved playing golf, especially with his grandson. He also liked going to Gatlinburg on vacations with his family; he liked playing putt putt, eating turtles from the Smokey Bear Candy Kitchen, and a good steak from the Peddler Steak House. His family and friends will always remember him as a gentle kind person that never met a stranger.

    A celebration of life is scheduled for Saturday, May 14, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at the home of the family, 200 Muirfield Lane, Clayton, NC 27527. All are welcome to attend and celebrate the life of John E. Calvert, Jr.
