Benson, NC: Mr. Johnny “Chris” Byrd, age 58, of Elevation Road passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC. Funeral Services will be 2:00PM-Sunday, February 19, 2023 at the Banner Post 109 American Legion Building 605 N. Wall Street, Benson, NC 27504. RFD Chaplain Jeff Neal and Rev. Glenn McCullen will officiate. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery with full Firemen Honors.

Chris was born on September 15, 1964 in Harnett County, NC. He was preceded in death by his mother, Myrtle Blackmon Byrd and his brother, Richie “Robin” Byrd. Chris was a Senior Firefighter with the Raleigh Fire Department for the last 26 years. He was a mentor to an enormous number of firefighters across several counties, and was always humble enough to train the next generation. Currently assigned to Rescue 16, he was very instrumental to the Raleigh Fire and Rescue program, where he has helped saved countless lives during his decorated career. Chris also served in many capacities on the Elevation Fire Department, where he served as Fire Chief. Chris was a Logistics Officer with Johnston County Emergency Services. He was loved and respected by so many in our surrounding counties, and will be missed by many.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Tracey Johnson Byrd; daughter, Kristen Byrd; father, Claude Byrd, Jr., sister-in-law, Freda Byrd; nieces, Michelle Williams and husband, Michael, and Kimberly Moore and husband, Brandon; great-nephews, Austin Williams and Carter Moore; special furbaby, Layla, and many other family, and a host of many friends.

The family will receive friends 5:00PM-9:00PM, Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Rose & Graham Funeral Home 301 W. Main Street, Benson, NC 27504, and other times at the home.
