    Joseph Herman Mitchell, 84, of Concord, N.C., formerly of Princeton, passed away on Friday, June 17, 2022 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center in Salisbury, N.C. surrounded by his family. Joseph was born in Johnston County on July 19, 1937 to the late Joseph “Malcolm” Mitchell and Maybell Woodard Mitchell.

    In addition to his parents, Joseph is preceded in death by his wife, Joy Ann Bowen Mitchell; daughter, Tammy Mitchell; brother, Tom Mitchell and sister, Ila Jones.

    Joseph is survived by his son, Joseph Allen Mitchell and significant other JoEllen Ross of Nashville, N.C.; daughter, Terry Jo Mitchell Rose and husband Scott of Concord, N.C.; grandchildren, Taylor Rose and wife Sabrina, Austin Rose and significant other Kaitie Dornauer, Brittany Mitchell and significant other Brandon Anderson, Hunter Mitchell, Maggie Keck, and husband Steve, Abigail Ross; great grandchildren, Ellie Keck and several other family and friends.

    Joseph proudly served his country in the US Navy for twenty years. He enlisted on September 11, 1956 and retired from the US Navy on July 30, 1976 at the rank of a 1st Class Petty Officer. He served as a Boatswain’s Mate on several naval ships during the Vietnam Conflict and Cold War.

    Joseph was a loving husband, daddy, Papa, brother, and friend. He married the love of his life, Joy, while stationed in Milwaukee, WI on April 25, 1964. He graduated from Princeton High School class of 1955. From a young age he was known as a jokester and a pool shark. After his naval career, he started his own business as a residential painter. He faithfully served as a volunteer grounds keeper at Fellowship United Methodist Church for over 20 years. In his spare time, he loved smack talking about college basketball, going fishing, and eating out with his family. He liked trucks, fast cars, and cigars. His sweet tooth for donuts, ice cream, and candy were like no others. Most importantly he loved God, his family, and all his pets. He will be dearly missed but precious memories will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

    The funeral service will be held at 6:00 PM on Friday, June 24, 2022 at Casey Funeral Home and Cremations Chapel with Darrell Robbins officiating. A visitation will be held two hours prior to the service from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM at Casey Funeral Home and Cremations in Princeton. Burial will take place in the Fellowship United Methodist Church Cemetery at 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 25, 2022.
