Joseph Vance Jackson, 76, of Spivey’s Corner, passed away on Friday, July 25, 2025, at The Service League of Greenville Hospice House after a lengthy illness during which he was supported and surrounded by the love of his family and friends.

Vance was born in Harnett County to the late Bruce Holt Jackson, Sr. and Kathleen Teresa West Jackson and attended ECU before being drafted into the service during the Vietnam War, serving in the 1st Cavalry Division of the United States Army. During this time, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Star Medal. After his service, he began his lifelong law enforcement career with his first employment at Wrightsville Beach Police Department, serving in many roles and various locations, before retiring as an ALE Supervisor of District #5 in 1999.

While he loved his 30 plus years in law enforcement, Vance’s passion was for the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow since 1992 and served in Troop #71 from 1992 to 2018 as both Assistant Scout Master and Scout Master. He served in many leadership roles as a member of the Coharie District Committee and the Tuscarora Council Executive Board from 2002 to 2023. During this time, he guided and served as a positive role model for numerous scouts, many of whom earned their Eagle Scout rank.

Vance, known by his friends for his honest and practical nature, was loyal, generous and supportive. After retirement he stayed busy with friends helping them with their businesses, traveling and working in farming and produce. He loved his friends, but the greatest love of his life was his son and daughter and his grandsons. He enjoyed their company so much and spending time with them every chance he was given.

Vance is loved and survived by his son, Roger Vance Jackson (Colette) of Leland; daughter, Jeanna Jackson Byrum (Graham) of Farmville; grandchildren, Lucas and Conner Jackson and Luke and Levi Byrum; brother, Bruce Holt Jackson, Jr (Bonnie) of Spivey’s Corner; and the mother of his children, Barbara Willis Wood.
