Coats, NC: Mrs. Joyce Thornton Powell, age 80, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at her residence. Funeral Services will be held 11:00AM – Friday, January 13, 2023 at the Rose & Graham Funeral Home Chapel in Coats. Officiating will be Rev. James Wallace. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Angier.
Joyce was born on May 2, 1942 in Harnett County, NC to the late Wilbert Woodrow and Lela Mae Harper Thornton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tyrus M. Powell; infant sister, Judy Faye Thornton; brothers, David Thornton and Earl Thornton. She retired from CP&L (Duke Energy) after 25 years of service. After retirement, Joyce loved traveling, visiting with her grandkids, and having lunch with her sisters and brothers.
Surviving include her children, Mark Patterson and wife, Kendra of Wake Forest, Brian Patterson and wife, Heidi of Chesterfield, VA; step-daughters, Cathy Powell of Rolesville, Charlotte Powell of Coats; grandchildren, Jaelyn Patterson, Sydney Hicks and husband, Matt, Matthew Patterson, Alivia Patterson, Richard Pope, Kelly Eddins, Jessica Arnold, Laura Dennis; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Betty Davis of Coats, Barbara Hoots and husband, Dan of Coats; brothers, Pete Thornton of Coats, Gene Thornton and wife, Faye of Coats; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 13, 2023 from 10:00AM until 10:45AM prior to the service at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Coats.
Flowers are welcomed; however, memorials may be made to one’s favorite charity.
