In the early morning hours of Sunday, January 30, 2022, Lola Belle Massengill Whittington was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and reunited with her husband of 54 years, and the love of her life, Thurman Henry Whittington.
Funeral Services will be 3:00PM, Wednesday, February 2, 2022 in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church in Four Oaks, NC. Rev. John Norman, Rev. Marie Fox, Amy Whittington and Neal Whittington will officiate. Burial will follow in the Four Oaks City Cemetery in Four Oaks, NC.
Lola Belle was born on August 26, 1938 in Four Oaks, to the late Lundy McKinley and Ida Belle Allen Massengill. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, infant Massengill, Paul, Silas, sisters, Leola, Martha, Bessie, Cleo, and Margie Lee. She graduated from Four Oaks High School in 1957 and began a career as a sewing machine operator at Jerold Corporation in 1958. She was employed by various sewing factories over the years. In the mid 1970’s through 1990, she was a stay at home mother. She returned to the work force in 1990 as a sewing machine operator and a teacher’s assistant at Benson Elementary School. She served for many years as Mission Friends leader and Girl’s in Action leader at First Baptist Church in Four Oaks. She was Nursery II Sunday School Teacher for more than 40 years, influencing the lives of many children at First Baptist of Four Oaks.
She is survived by her daughter, Amy Benita Whittington of Benson, NC; son, Thurman Neal Whittington and wife, Dee of Garner and Wilmington; granddaughters, Raynor Elizabeth Whittington and Salem Arabella Whittington; sisters, Ann Massengill and husband Russell Capps, and Jean Whittington, and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the team of devoted and compassionate caregivers, sister, Ann Massengill, Carolyn Hill, Cindy Blackmon, Laurie Printup, Kathy Coats, Sally Wilson, and Liberty Healthcare and Hospice.
Flowers are welcomed and memorials may be made to the Food Pantry and Backpack Buddy Program at the First Baptist Church of Four Oaks, PO Box 717, Four Oaks, NC 27524.
The family will receive friends from 1:45PM-2:45PM, Wednesday, February 2, 2022 in the Fellowship Hall at First Baptist Church in Four Oaks, NC.
In accordance with the NC COVID 19 guidelines, the funeral home suggests practicing social distancing guidelines. Masks are not required for all services but highly suggested.
