Michael Scott Lyles

Birth Date: 10/29/1959
Deceased Date: 09/07/2025
Michael Scott Lyles Sr., 65, of Clayton, NC, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025.
Affectionately known as Mike, he was a shining light in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His journey on this earth was marked by love, compassion, and an unwavering faith in God.
Mike was preceded in death by his grandparents, O’Neill Kenneth and Hazel Brown Lyles, and Stephen Andrew and Ethel Browning Harvey, as well as his brother, Christopher Mark Lyles. He is survived by his former wife, Elizabeth Lewallen; and their son, Michael Scott Jr., whose steadfast love and support brought him immense pride. He is also survived by his parents, Jack and Frances Lyles; his brothers, Linc Lyles (Jennifer) and Jason Lyles (Andrea); and many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Born in Roanoke Rapids, NC, on October 29, 1959, Mike spent part of his childhood in Marion, SC. After high school in Roanoke Rapids, he joined the United States Air Force—following in the footsteps of his father, Jack, also a proud Air Force veteran. Serving in communications, Mike became a skilled ham radio operator, ensuring stable communication between air traffic control and Air Force pilots. His work was vital, especially when phone lines or early computer systems failed, both in times of peace and during conflict.
Mike served his country with honor in Texas, Alabama, California, and overseas in Turkey before receiving his honorable discharge in Sumter, South Carolina. It was there he began his family, eventually settling in North Carolina, where he lived in Louisburg, Raleigh, and finally, Clayton.
Throughout his career, Mike worked with Joyner Electric in Roanoke Rapids, Dick and Associates in Sumter, and later in management at Saks Fifth Avenue in Raleigh, before his early retirement. A devoted UNC Tarheel fan and follower of Christ, he was an active member of Grace Community Church in Smithfield, where he cherished worship and fellowship with his church family.
Mike also had a wide-reaching presence on Facebook, where his thoughtful posts and uplifting spirit inspired and encouraged many. His ability to connect with others was a true gift, and his impact extended far beyond his immediate community.
Those who knew Mike will remember his kind heart, generous nature, and especially his free spirit. He was a man of deep compassion who cherished his family and friends—always ready with a listening ear or a helping hand.
Mike will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, joy, and Christian faith will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Grace Community Church in Smithfield, NC. Flowers are welcome. Online condolences can be made at www.parrishfh.com.
