Vernon Mitchell “Pops” Thompson, Jr., age 83, passed away Sunday, October 30, 2022 at SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Born May 5, 1939 in Baltimore, MD he was a son of the late Vernon Mitchell and Helen Grace Myers Thompson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Thompson; brother, David Thompson; and sisters, Betty Diven, Jeannie Thompson and Lorraine Fuller.
Vernon proudly served his country with over 20 years of service in the United States Air Force. Vernon was a member of Thanksgiving Baptist Church and a Mason for many years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 4, 2022 in Thanksgiving Baptist Church, 6701 NC-42, Selma, NC 27576, with Rev. Danny Creech officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Thursday evening at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma.
Surviving are his daughters, Lauren Thompson (Donna Renaud) of Kenly, Helene Pavlovic (David) of Kenly, Lizabeth June Carroll (Donny) of Selma, Wendy Pope (Alan) of Kenly, and Rita Carroll (Ricky) of Selma; brother, Roger Thompson of Georgia; sisters, Patsy Wilson and Evelyn Aquilla, both of Maryland; twelve grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.
The family would like to send a special thanks to Mr. Vernon’s hospice nurses, Breigh and Kimm, for the loving care they provided to their Pops.
