Garner – Billy Melvin Sullivan, age 87, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 5, 2020, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born a son of the late Jonathan Jasper and Bertha Phillips Sullivan on October 19, 1932, in Johnston County. He is preceded in death by eleven siblings. Billy was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Raleigh. He served in the United States Army and was a member of the American Legion Post # 232. Billy was a servant of the Lord and he lived his life as a testimony to God’s Love and Grace. He loved softball and enjoyed watching his daughters play. He was a member of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America and achieved the Silver Beaver rank. He loved mowing grass, singing in the church choir, carving, and crafting scarfs, hats, and shawls for the local nursing home.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, September 9, 2020, in the Hatcher family Cemetery in Selma at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Kevin Seymour and Rev. Marshall Stewart officiating. Family and friends may pay respects to Billy on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Mrs. Mary Frances Hatcher Sullivan; sons, James Melvin Sullivan (wife Terri) of Clayton, Robert Edward Sullivan (wife Darlene) of Cochranville, PA; daughters, Nancy Gwendolyn Byrum (husband J.G.) of Colorado Springs, CO, Denise Sullivan Harper (husband Bill) of Washington, NC and Serena Sullivan Luke (husband Bob) of Four Oaks; brothers, Wiley Thompson Sullivan (wife Margaret) of Nashville, NC and Gene Autry Sullivan (wife Iris) of Pine Level; sisters, Doris Blanche Peele of Virginia Beach, VA and Marverine Faye “Snook” Godwin of Micro; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
