Carson Theodore “Ted” Wells

    Carson Theodore (Ted) Wells was born October 13, 1921 in Henderson, North Carolina. Upon the untimely death of his mother, Helen Hobgood Wells, he was raised by his maternal grandparents Luther and Elizabeth Hobgood. In addition to his mother and grandparents he was pre-deceased by his wife of 53 years, Willie Ruth Edmonds Wells and his grandson, Christopher Bage Wells.
    Ted attended Henderson High School and entered the US Army in 1940. As one of the” Greatest Generation “, he served in the 119 Infantry, 30th division. He was wounded on the front lines of combat in Normandy, France and received the Purple Heart. After discharge from the army he attended the Southern School of Printing in Nashville, Tennessee. Returning to North Carolina he eventually was employed by the Smithfield Herald where he worked for 35 years.
    A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield he also volunteered for many years with Johnston County Contact.
    Ted loved fishing and was an avid Wolfpack fan. He will be remembered by his children for his gentleness and love of his family.
    He is survived by his children, Carson Ted Wells, Jr. (Bonnie Bell), Beryl Howard Wells (Billy), Helen Hope Wells, Jennifer Wells Vevurka (Bob), six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter.
    At his request his body was cremated and his ashes interred beside his wife in a private family service. The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2018 in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield.
    In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the 3HC Hospice, 821 North Brightleaf Blvd., Smithfield, NC 27577.
