Deborah “Debbie” Exum Henderson

    Debbie Exum Henderson died on February 18, 2018, at SECU Hospice House, Smithfield, after fighting a brave ten-month battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Jim Henderson; her two daughters, Sarah Lewis and husband Brant; and Jaime Beasley and husband George; and four grandchildren: Hannah Lewis, James Lewis, Charlie Lewis, and Kambell Beasley. The daughter of the late George Thomas and Martha (Pat) Lanius Exum, Debbie is also survived by her sister, Martie Exum Wentz.

    A graduate of East Carolina University, Debbie dedicated her life to serving others. She spent 20 years as a maternal health social worker at the Johnston County Health Department, followed by 13 years as an adult services social worker at the Johnston County Department of Social Services. Debbie’s favorite job of all was being a wife, mother, and grandmother. Her husband was her focus, her children her pride, and her grandchildren her fun. Debbie’s unwavering love and support for her family was evident to all that knew her.

    An active member of First Presbyterian Church, Debbie served as Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, Preschool Board Chair and Christian Education Committee Chair. She was also leader of a
    Bereavement Meal Team of the Presbyterian Women.

    Debbie lived her life of service with grace and dignity in all that she did. We will remember her smile and her genuine love for others.

    A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 22, 2018 in First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joseph Hester officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the church.
