Smithfield – Gene Howard Phelps, age 85, died Saturday afternoon in the SECU Hospice House. Born December 25, 1933 in Bertie County, he was a son of the late Walter Howard and Elizabeth Phelps Phelps. Gene was the manager of the Johnston Memorial Hospital Lab for 44 years and was the instructor for their Lab School. He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church in Smithfield for more than 59 years.
A graveside service, with military and masonic honors, will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 27, 2019 in the Riverside Cemetery Extension with the Rev. Ben Wines and the Dr. Sherrill Stevens officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Chappell Phelps; sister, Peggy Phelps Todd and husband Hoyt of Aulander and sister-in-law, Joyce Mahon of Greenville, SC and her son, Brian Foster of Scottsdale, AZ.
