    Smithfield – Johnnie Lee Ennis, age 88, passed away Thursday March 4, 2021 at his home in Smithfield. He was born in Johnston County on June 5, 1932 to the late Carl and Betsy Pilkington Ennis. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by wife, Minnie Lee Ennis; 5 brothers; 5 sisters.

    A funeral service will be held Monday March 8th, 2021 at 11 AM at Believers Baptist Church in Clayton. The family will receive visitors at the church from 10 AM to 11 AM. Burial will follow the funeral service in Knollwood Memorial Park.

    Mr. Ennis is survived by daughters, Betsy Ennis and husband Art Pina of Clayton, Janice Watkins and husband Donnie of Kenly; step son, Wayne Lee and wife Sarah Ann (who was like a daughter) of Smithfield; step daughter, Tracie Brewer and husband William of Selma; brother, Marvin Ennis of Wetherford, TX; sister, Emmalou Gilbert of Selma; 6 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild;

    Mr. Ennis was a member at Believers Baptist Church in Clayton and was also a United States Army and Navy veteran. Mr. Ennis was a POW during the Korean War. He also served as a chef to the admiral ship in his Navy service. He enjoyed travelling, cutting grass, and watching westerns. He loved his church family and was known for being small in stature but having a big heart.
