    Mary Claire Thompson, age 67, passed away at home, December 4, 2019 in Smithfield, Mary was born April 2, 1952 in Miami, Florida to Charles and Helen McCarthy Thompson. She had beautiful red hair and bright blue eyes. She was the hinge, #6 in what was to become a family of 11 children.

    Mary was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church where she participated as a Eucharistic Minister, money counter and was available wherever her talents were needed.

    She worked for 33 years in the intensive care unit as an LPN at Johnston Medical Center, she loved working with the personnel and taking care of the patients.

    Mary was our tomboy and loved participating in sports. She was a member of the hospital basketball team known as the Pill Pushers, Doug’s Exxon Softball team. She also loved playing golf and any other sport she could participate in. She loved watching John Wayne movies, cooking, her specialty was the Humming Bird cake which everyone loved. She would take random road trips, which the nieces and nephews loved to do, camping, going to the beach. Mary just loved life.

    As a single lady, Mary was the second mom to her 26 nieces and nephews and Great Aunt to 44 great nieces and nephews. All the children in her neighborhood loved Ms. Mary. She loved to crochet and 23 of her nieces and nephews received a baby blanket from her.

    One of her great loves was collecting family history and taking pictures. As a family we so appreciated that she did this.

    Mary Claire was preceded in death by her parents, Helen McCarthy Thompson, Charles M. Thompson, brother Charles Gregory Thompson, niece Keller Ok Hui Thayer and nephew Kevin Jesse Thompson.

    She is survived by her dog, Murphy, her 3 sisters, Jeanette Thompson Hay (David), Loretta Thompson Owens (John), Monica Thompson Mounts (Larry). Her six brothers, Stephen Thompson (Caryl), Kevin Thompson (Cheryl), Gerard Thompson (Ok Hui), Joseph Thompson (Brent), Andrew Thompson (Valerie), David Thompson (Tami).

    A special thanks to dear friends of Mary’s who were a big help, Rhonda Mooneyham and Betty Wooten, as well as all her close neighborhood friends.

    The family will receive friends at Underwood Funeral Home in Smithfield from 7 PM until 9 PM on December 13th.

    Funeral service will be at 12:00 noon on December 14th at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Clayton, NC.

    In lieu of flowers, contributions would be appreciated to the Building Fund, St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 4057 US 70 Business West, Clayton, NC 27520. Contributions may also be sent to Johnston Health Home Care and Hospice, 426 Hospital Rd., P.O. 1376, Smithfield, NC 27577

    Anyone who was fortunate to have met Mary felt as though they met a dear friend.

    She will be missed by all.
