Smithfield—Sylvia Jean Britt, 79, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2017. Born in Salisbury, NC on January 17, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Thelbert Braxton and Mary Jones Barbour. She was the oldest of her three siblings. Jean taught music in Johnston County Schools for over 30 years. She was very active in the Neuse Little Theatre and she played piano at First Christian Church for many years. Jean enjoyed seeing plays and going to concerts as well as visiting with family and friends. She spent a lot of time with her four grandchildren and she had a special relationship with each one. She enjoyed watching movies and listening to all types of music. She kept up with everything her adult grandchildren were doing. Jean lived each day to the fullest, interacting with the staff at Smithfield Manor and with her family and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Saturday, January 21, 2017 at First Christian Church. The family will receive friends at the church from 1PM until 2 PM prior to the service. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery Extension.
Surviving are: sons, Alan and Rachel Britt, Andy and Parker Britt, all of Smithfield; brother, James and Janice Barbour of Greenville; sister, Evangeline Hardee of Texas; grandchildren, Andrew Britt, Avery Britt, Allison Britt Johnson and husband Chris, and Callie Britt. Sylvia was preceded in death by a sister, Bonita Owens.
