Selma-William Kenneth Hinton passed away on Wednesday, November 17th at Johnston Memorial hospital surrounded by family.
William Kenneth Hinton is the son of Score Obie Hinton and Effie Jane Hinton. He was born February 29, 1940 in the Antioch Community. Kenneth graduated from Corinth Holders High School in 1958 and attended Campbell University for two years and went on to graduate from Wake Forest University with a B.A. in history in 1962. He then went on to graduate from Wake Forest University law school in 1965.
Kenneth and his wife Barbara moved to Troy, NC in Montgomery County upon his graduation from law school where he served as a prosecuting attorney for two years. They then moved the family to Smithfield, NC, where Ken opened up a local law practice in 1967. He served as the town attorney for the town of Clayton for eight years in the early to late 1970s.
Besides practicing law for 30 years, Ken also taught business law classes at Johnston Community College and at Campbell University. He was a former member of the Smithfield Jaycees and was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Smithfield, where he taught Youth Sunday School and was a member of the Bissell Sunday School class. Ken also worked as a real estate developer in Johnston and Wake Counties.
Kenneth spent a lot of his free time playing golf as a long time member of the Johnston County Country Club, playing cards, watching sports – especially his beloved Wake Forest Demon Deacons – and spending time with family.
Ken is preceded in death by his brother, Jack Hinton and his grandson, Joseph Franklin Wood. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara McFarland Hinton, his two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathryn Hinton Nixon and husband, Rich of Selma, Kellie Hinton Wood and husband Frank of Benson, grandchildren William Hinton Edgerton, Jackson Aaron Wood and Georgia Kate Edgerton, sister Jeanette Rowe of York, Virginia, and brother Hugh Hinton of Pinehurst, NC.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2021 at 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church in Smithfield.
In light of health concerns due to COVID, visitation plans have not been determined at this time.
