Smithfield – William Randolph Sullivan, age 69, passed on Tuesday August 4, 2020.
Mr. Sullivan, known best as Randy to his family, friends and colleagues, was born in Johnston County on January 30, 1951 to Larry F. Sullivan and Winnie Pilkington Rutter. Randy graduated from Selma High School and shortly after, in 1971, enlisted in the United States Army. After graduating from Pembroke State University, Randy landed a job in 1978 in local state government that launched him on a 30 year journey at the Employment Security Commission of NC.
Randy proudly served his country toggling between active duty and reserves for 38 years. He held various duty assignments in Infantry, most notably serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel and retired from the Army in January 2010. During his tenure, he received numerous meritorious service medals, commendation medal awards, and the Bronze Star Medal.
Randy enjoyed fishing, playing golf and traveling. He is described as having a personality bigger than life and a laugh you could recognize across the room. Randy will forever be remembered and loved by those he left behind. He is preceded in death by his father and a niece. In addition to his mother Ms. Rutter, Randy is also survived by daughter, M. Lee-ann Sullivan of Charlotte; Son, Kyle R. Sullivan of Wilmington; Brothers, Larry and Steve Sullivan of Pine Level.
