Officials Cut Ribbon On Affordable Housing Project In Garner

GARNER, N.C. – Town of Garner and Wake County officials joined the Kelley Development Company and other dignitaries on Oct. 16 for the grand opening of the Tryon Station affordable housing development off of Creech Road in Garner.

The 176-unit, income-restricted apartment development targets households earning around 60 percent of area median income. The apartment complex was fully leased within 90 days of units becoming available. Kelley Development says the units in the complex will remain affordable for the next 30 years.

The Tryon Station project was made possible in part by $750,000 in gap financing from the Town of Garner – its first-ever investment in new affordable housing construction – and over $6.6 million in gap financing from Wake County. The Town’s share of financing was covered by funds Garner received through the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

The Garner Town Council, Town staff and community members have identified affordable housing as a top priority now and for the foreseeable future. The Town recently formed a Housing Advisory Committee, which is beginning the work of creating an Affordable Housing Plan that will help shape the Town’s future housing and community development efforts.

The Council also approved additional funds in this fiscal year’s budget to enhance the Town’s partnership with the nonprofit group Preserving Home. Through this partnership, the Town is able to help Garner homeowners maintain safe and affordable homes by funding much-needed repair and renovation work.
