CLAYTON – A Clayton man was killed Monday morning when a freight train collided with his vehicle in Downtown Clayton.

The crash occurred around 10:50 a.m. at the Central Street railroad crossing, where a 2012 Toyota Corolla attempted to drive around lowered crossing arms and flashing warning lights, according to Clayton Police Chief Greg Tart.

The vehicle, driven by 62-year-old Dwayne Alton Bryant of Clayton, was struck on the driver’s side by an eastbound Norfolk Southern freight train. The impact caused the car to overturn and come to rest approximately 300 feet from the point of collision. The train eventually came to a stop before reaching the Highway 42 East intersection.

Bryant died from his injuries. No injuries were reported among the train’s crew.

Chief Tart confirmed that the collision was captured by Clayton Police traffic cameras. The incident remains under investigation.
