Pedestrian Dies After Being Struck By Train In Smithfield

SMITHFIELD — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train Thursday evening.

Smithfield Police were notified of the collision around 6:35 p.m. The incident occurred near the Edgerton Street area.

Police said a CSX freight train struck the pedestrian, who died as a result of the collision.

Smithfield Police detectives and CSX investigators responded to the scene and were investigating Thursday evening.

The identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Thursday’s collision is the fourth pedestrian death involving a train in Smithfield since June 2025.
