BENSON – One person died and two others were injured after two tractor trailers collided Tuesday morning on Interstate 40 near Highway 210. The wreck was reported around 8:30am near the 318 mile marker.

A tractor trailer was traveling westbound in the left lane when the driver braked suddenly for slower traffic ahead. The semi jackknifed and skidded off the right shoulder of the interstate striking a pedestrian standing next to a parked tractor trailer transporting a steel beam.

The pedestrian, Roy Dale Ward, 58, of Leland, NC died at the scene. The Highway Patrol said Mr. Ward was the driver of a pilot truck that was part of the crew transporting the steel beam. Ward was outside his vehicle standing next to the stationary semi when he was fatally struck.

Two people in the truck that caused the collision sustained minor injuries, primarily cuts and bruises.

Charges are pending.

While traffic was being detoured around the tractor trailer accident, a separate three car crash occurred just after 12 Noon near the 320 mile marker. Three people were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

  1. Tractor Trailers do follow to close. They make me nervus as they sometimes ride my bumper. This is a result of that. I pray for the man and family that was killed. As far as accidents go, not sure as to what is going on but my wife and I was stuck in traffic on I 40 in Wake County this morning when a dump truck hit a car and then this afternoon another accident on Hwy 70 in Clayton involving two cars. Traffic backed up from Walmart to Burger King. WHAT IS GOING ON DRIVERS, WAKE UP!
