A Smithfield man sustained serious injuries after being struck by a car on US 70 in Selma. The accident was reported at 8:32pm Monday near the intersection of Ricks Road.
Selma Police said a 2016 Nissan driven by Ranikia Laushaun Jones, 19, of Selma was traveling eastbound on US 70 and as she entered the left turn lane at an estimated 35 miles per hour and struck a pedestrian standing in the roadway. The individual, William Holt Smith, 49, of Quail Road, Smithfield landed on the hood of the car, struck the windshield and when the vehicle came to a stop fell onto the pavement. Smith was rushed to Wake Medical Center in Raleigh for treatment.
Police said Smith was wearing dark clothing and admitted to drinking Officers detected a strong odor of alcohol from Smith while at the scene.
A witness reported seeing Smith standing in the middle of the road prior to the crash.
Jones and a passenger in her car were not injured. No charges were filed.
