Damage from Hurricane Matthew on a stretch of a rural roadway near Benson in Johnston County will get a permanent fix starting Monday, April 24. A drainage pipe in the 800 block of the Banner Elk Road received a temporary fix that enabled it to be opened as soon as possible after the hurricane, but it will close again at that location Monday so crews can replace the pipe and pave that section of the roadway.
The work on Banner Elk Road is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. on Monday, with the road reopened by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 15.
Access to driveways along Banner Elk Road will remain open up to the work zone. To get around the closure, a signed detour will use NC 50 and Denning Road.
Drivers are urged to use extra caution when approaching the work zone, pay attention to detour signs and anticipate needing extra time when traveling in the area.
