Smithfield Police are investigating the death of man on the campus of Johnston Community College (JCC) in Smithfield.
The incident was reported around 9:50 PM Wednesday near the pond on the rear of the JCC campus on College Road.
Police Chief Michael Scott told WTSB News the 48 year-old victim, who is from Maxton, NC, was with another individual when they collapsed and stopped breathing. The individual called 911 for help but efforts to save the man were not successful.
Chief Scott said the death does not appear to be suspicious. Detectives are working with the medical examiner to try and determine the cause of death.
Officials did not say why the man was on campus so late at night or if he was a student.
