Police Investigating Infant’s Death

SMITHFIELD – Detectives are investigating the death of an infant.

Around 6:55am Friday, Jan. 31, Smithfield Police and Johnston County EMS were dispatched to an apartment on Fieldale Drive where they located a 9 month-old baby. The baby was pronounced deceased.

Smithfield Police Chief Pete Hedrick said the death is not suspicious but authorities are awaiting a report from the medical examiner to determine the exact cause of death.
