Smithfield Police are investigating the alleged rape of a woman in East Smithfield.
The 39 year-old victim reported the sexual assault to police on Monday.
Police Captain R.K. Powell said there was a delay of several weeks between when the alleged incident occurred and when the victim notified police. A detective has been assigned to the case.
The incident was not random.
