Smithfield Police are searching for the driver of a log truck involved in an early morning hit and run accident. It happened at 5:34am today (Wednesday) on Highway 70 at Mallard Road near Interstate 95.
Police said a log truck was turning from Mallard Road onto Highway 70 and failed to yield to a Jeep SUV driven by Kevin Dwayne Brazil of Lexington. There were two passengers in the SUV.
After the crash, police said the log truck began to pull onto the shoulder as if the driver planned to stop but instead fled on Highway 70.
The occupants in the SUV were unable to give police a good description of the log truck, which did sustain damage in the collision.
