Police: Smithfield-Selma High Bomb Threat Was A Hoax

SMITHFIELD, N.C. – Smithfield Police are investigating after a bomb threat involving Smithfield-Selma High School was posted on social media Tuesday night, but officers say the threat was a hoax.

Police said they were notified by the FBI after federal agents became aware of an Instagram post referencing the school.

Officers quickly identified a Smithfield-Selma High School student and contacted the juvenile and his mother.

Police said the student admitted making the post but told officers it was intended as a joke.

Investigators determined there was no actual threat to the school.

Because of the seriousness of the incident, police said the 15-year-old is expected to face juvenile petitions.

Johnston County Public Schools said the district is still reviewing the incident and will proceed in accordance with district policy and applicable laws.

“The district is still reviewing the incident and will proceed following appropriate district policy and governing laws,” JCPS said in a statement. “Johnston County Public Schools is thankful for the ongoing support and partnership of our federal and local law enforcement agencies. Their support is critical in ensuring that our students and staff remain safe.”
