Police: Smithfield Shooting Appears To Be Isolated Incident

SMITHFIELD, N.C. – A person was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon on South Brightleaf Boulevard, and police said charges are pending.

Smithfield Police were dispatched at approximately 5:30 p.m. Sept. 16 to the 2100 block of South Brightleaf Boulevard following a report of a shooting.

Officers arrived and found a person suffering from gunshot wounds near the roadway. First responders began life-saving measures, but the victim died at the scene.

A heavy law enforcement presence surrounded the area Wednesday evening, including Smithfield Police, Johnston County sheriff’s deputies and state troopers.

At the scene, a sheet covered the victim’s body near the roadway.

Police said the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident and that the people involved knew one another.

Authorities said there does not appear to be an active threat to the public.

The name of the victim has not been released.

The investigation remains ongoing, and Smithfield Police said charges are pending.
